An interesting quiz question might be to ask people how many of the world’s top ten largest casinos by the area covered are in Las Vegas? The answer is just one!That’s partly because of the rapid growth of China over recent years and partly because the big expansion in the world’s casino these days is online. Anyway, here are the world’s top ten casinos by floor space in reverse order:

10. Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, Atlantic City, USA

Square feet: 161,000

The Borgata is the third largest casino in the U.S. Its name means little village in Italian, buit this aint small. In fact, it’s the largest resort by a long stretch in New Jersey’s home of gambling, Atlantic City.

9. Casino Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal

 

Square feet: 165,000

Just a little bigger than the Borgata, the Lisboa is in Lisbon’s famous ‘Park Of The Nations’ and it’s the biggest casino in Europe. It opened in 2006, is owned by Estoril-Sol, which is in turn partly owned by well-known Hong Kong-based gambling mogul, Stanley Ho.

8. MGM Grand Las Vegas (Las Vegas, USA)

 

Square Feet: 170,000

The MGM Grand is the biggest casino in Las Vegas. It’s also the biggest hotel resort complex in the USA. But when it opened 20 years ago, it was the world’s largest casino hotel. Now it’s 8^th; that’s how quickly things have changed.

7. Sands Macao (Macau, China)

 

Square feet: 229,000

The Sands Macau opened for business in 2004. Today, it’s a hugely popular gambling destination for millions of tourists from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.

6. MGM Grand Macau, Macau, China

 

Square feet: 221,952

The MGM Macau is a 35 storey hotel tower with 600 rooms, suites or villas, and a huge casino complex with private gaming salons for VIP customers.

5. Tusk Rio Casino Resort, Klerksdorp, South Africa

 

Square feet: 266,330

The Tusk Rio was based on the famous Rio Carnival in Brazil. It’s the African continent’s biggest casino by far.

Another Macau casino, the Ponte’s designed is based on Macau’s roots with a European/Portuguese flavour mixed with Chinese styles; and it works.

3. Foxwoods Resorts Casino, Ledyard, Connecticut

 

Square feet: 340,000

You may not have thought of Connecticut when it comes to giant U.S.-based casinos, but the Foxwoods Resort Casino is the biggest. What’s more, it’s based on the Mashantucket Pequot Indian Reservation.

2. City of Dreams Casino, Macau, China

 

Square feet: 420,000

Yet another Macau –based casino which reflects the Chinese love of gambling, the City of Dreams is aimed mainly at young single people and young couples. And it’s enormous! But it’s not quite the biggest in the world, nor in Macau as that honour goes to…

Square feet: 546,000

This luxury resort on Macau’s Coast is owned by Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands group (LVS) and it’s based on a Venetian theme, of course. And it’s a family-oriented giant.
