Top 10 Golden Globes 2013 Predictions

The road to Oscars 2013 has begun and the first step is the Golden Globes Awards 2013. On December 13, 2012, the nominations for the Golden Globes Awards 2013 were announced. While there were many surprises and snubs, the talking point remained: Who will win the Golden Globes?

Predictions have started. Pundits have already picked up their favorites for the Golden Globes Awards 2013. Of course these are mere predictions. You may believe them or not, it’s entirely up to you. But the fact remains that Golden Globes 2013 nominations are just the start of a long debate which will end on Oscar Gala 2013.

Lincoln leads the pack in films nominations with 7 Golden Globes nominations, followed by Argo and Django Unchained with 5 Golden Globes nominations each. Game Change and Homeland lead the television pack with 5 and 4 Golden Globes nominations respectively.

So who is going to win the Golden Globes race? The debate has started, predictions have begun and fans are rooting for their favorites to take home the trophy.  I have also come up with this list of the top 10 Golden Globes Awards 2013 predictions. First take a look at these top 10 predictions and then let me know who your favorites are.

Here is the list of the top 10 Golden Globes Awards 2013 predictions:

10. TV Comedy

TV Comedy

TV Comedy

Starting off with TV comedy, my pick for the best TV series comedy has to be Modern Family. The show is watched and loved by masses and it is a complete family show. Having said that, Big Bang Theory could give a tough competition to Modern Family.

For the best TV comedy actor, I will put my money on Jim Parsons for Big Bang Theory, although Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) and Matt Le Blanc (Episodes) may cause an upset. For best TV comedy actress, I have a strong feeling that Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) should bag the Golden Globe.

9. Best TV Actress- Drama

The next category I would like to discuss is the Best TV Actress- Drama. My prediction is that this will be a strong fight between Michelle Dockery and Julianna Marguiles. Michelle Dockery is nominated for her role in the popular British drama, Downton Abbey. The show is a major hit in the US. While Michelle Dockery may fancy her chances, I have to give this one to Julianna Marguiles for Good Wife. She is fantastic in that role and has won last year as well.

8. Best TV Actor- Drama

Best TV Actor- Drama

Perhaps the toughest category in all drama categories. There is such a great list of Golden Globe nominees for this category. You have Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Damian Lewis (Homeland), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad). This is the only category where it is extremely difficult to pick up a winner. All are great actors who have a strong fan following. Having said that, I believe that Steve Buscemi or Jon Hamm should get the Golden Globe Award for best actor in drama.

7. Best TV Show

Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, Homeland and The Newsroom compete for the Best TV show.  Downton Abbey has a huge following in US, which is unusual for a British show. Homeland was a huge winner last year round. But this year, my prediction is that Boardwalk Empire should win the Golden Globe. This season, the whole show was great, especially the last part of the season.

6. Best Foreign Film

Best Foreign Film

I think The Intouchables and Rust and Bone are the major contenders for this year’s Best Foreign Language Film. Both movies have really moved the audiences and are very good on the emotional part as well as the acting part. Marian Cotillard was the heart of Rust and Bone. Omar Sy was the lead in the French film, The Intouchables. Personally, I found The Intouchables a lot more enjoyable. It contained elements of emotion, comedy and great acting. My pick for this year’s Golden Globe would be The Intouchables.

5. Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

 Best Supporting Actor

Best Supporting Actor

Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln) are the main contenders for this award. My prediction is that Leonardo DiCaprio will win this one. The main reason this will happen is that Lincoln is a strong favorite in best movie and lead actor categories. Django Unchained will get the supporting actor award.

4. Musical or Comedy Films Awards

 Best Musical or Comedy

Best Musical or Comedy

Les Miserables is a huge favorite here. My prediction is that the best musical or comedy film Golden Globe shall go to Les Miserable. The best actor award shall be competed between Hugh Jackman (Les Misearbles) and Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), with Jackman probably winning it. For the best actress in a musical or comedy, the strong favorite is Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), although Meryl Streep (Hope Springs) could cause an upset here.

3. Best Director

Best Director

The Golden Globes for the best director 2013 should go to Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty). I say this because the US awards show are pretty biased towards this anti-terror war stuff. The list has other potential winners like Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), Ang Lee (Life of Pi) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained). But there were a lot of potential winners when Hurt Locker was competing some years back and it managed to won an Oscar (even though it failed to win the Golden Globe). Most pundits are calling Kathryn Bigelow to win this time, and I have to agree with them.

2. Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama

Best Actress

This is one category where pundits and critics just can’t agree on one candidate. Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone), Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Rachel Weisz (The Deep Blue Sea) are in this category. The strongest contenders in this category are Jessica Chastain, Marian Cotillard and Helen Mirror. While most pundits are going with Jessica Chastain, I feel this is Marian Cotillard’s moment to shine.

1. Best Picture and Actor – Drama

Best Picture and Actor – Drama

Best Picture and Actor – Drama

Lincoln is a strong favorite in the best picture category. The story about the US president and the slave act has been received very positively by critics. My prediction for the best picture is Lincoln, but as I mentioned before, movies like Zero Dark Thirty tend to cause some major upsets. I don’t see that happening this time around and the Golden Globe award for best picture 2013 should go to Lincoln.

Coming to the best actor, Daniel Day-Lewis is a great actor and his role as President Lincoln has been widely praised by all critics. The only person who might give him a fight is Denzel Washington, who is nominated for Flight. My prediction for the Golden Globe 2013 best actor is that Daniel Day-Lewis will win, and subsequently win an Oscar as well.
